Jeanne's father runs a trading post. When a hunter named Henri LeSouris, the mouse, offers his furs for one of the man's five daughters. Jeanne is traded and wed, with the promise that she won't be beaten or abused.
Henri is patient and gentle with the young girl, but he keeps moving in search of good hunting from the Alleghenies down through the Appalachian mountain chain. He finally settles in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, when pregnant Jeanne can travel no further.
The store owner, Jasper Sykes, is a veteran of the Spanish-American war. When Henri LeSouris, goes missing, killed and believed eaten by a bear, his widow becomes homeless. Jasper is nearly deaf, tall and intimidating to the young woman and most of his neighbors. Although he offers Jeanne and her newborn son food and shelter, he demands she pay off her husband’s debt.
Jeanne, called Widow Mouse, is shunned at first by the close knit community of Kyles Ford. She is a northerner, a widow living with a bachelor, Catholic, and perhaps worst of all, she can read and write.
Isolated, she learns Jasper isn’t an ogre, just shy and hard of hearing. She tries to help him overcome his handicap. But can such a strange couple ever find love and happiness?

Nothing like a soft warm blanket to curl under on a cold night. That's how this story read. No billionaire's, no fancy apartments, no one after you. sound boring???? Not in the least. Just a warm story about people living off the land. Some knew more than others but they all got along sooner or later. Go back to the simple times in life and relax but work hard and almost all day long. Hopefully you will come home to a loving partner, not all that's for sure. Just like today. But this story was a loving one, so it was warm and sweet. The sex was there but all that you were told is that he loved her and took her to bed. Up to you to know the rest.Product details

I read a book a day. Needless to say, I get very excited when one of my favorite authors writes a new book. And, J. R. Biery is ABSOLUTELY one of the best writers of historical fiction today!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT STORY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THID BOOK.
I loved everything about this story. I found it really hard to stop reading. I am looking forward to reading another book from this author. You won't regret buying this one!
But it wasn't the Authors writing ability. I didn't care for the storyline and the way the characters talked. Will try another story
This book is very good.. definitely not what I expected for the low price. Don't pass this one up
Being a fan of Ms. Biery's I started reading this book thinking I am really going to enjoy it, but, I loved it. Ms. Biery has a unique ability to create characters that grab you from the beginning and take you for a ride. At end of the book they are a part of you! I feel I was given a unique a experience of seeing what it was like in the Appalachians many years ago. I can sincerely recommend this book to anyone who loves character driven stories because there is no one better at writing them then Ms. Biery.
The grammar and typos distracted me from the story. There were countless commas and sentence fragments. It is unfortunate that there seemed to be no proofreading or spellchecking.
Also, we know that in this era there was no Enfamil or Gerber, so I could have done without a detailed breastfeeding description on every other page. In her book The Milche Bride, this would have been more acceptable, but I just got sick of hearing about nipples and breasts.
This story had the mountain village feel you get from the film Cold Mountain, and I liked that. However, it needed better research (modern terms were used) better character development, and better editing. The cover art was also kind of goofy. I wanted more out of what had the potential to be a good read.
